What is PRP?

what is PRP?

What is PRP? If you are new to the world of PRP, or you are thinking about offering it as a treatment this year, then this blog is for you. Below, we will break down exactly what PRP is, what indications it can be effective in, and how it works.

So, what is PRP?

PRP simply stands for Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy and is a treatment that uses the body’s blood, and its key components to stimulate collagen production and aid tissue repair.

Historically, PRP was used in Sports Science to help major athletes, including Tiger Woods overcome injuries. Fast-forward a couple of years, studies started to show that PRP was effective for use addressing several indications.

Today, PRP is one of the most popular and safest aesthetic treatments around and has been dubbed the ‘Vampire Facial’ due to its use of blood. Today, it is one of the most popular treatments in the aesthetics space and is loved by the Hollywood elite.

What can PRP treat?

Besides its popularity in addressing sports injuries, PRP is highly effective in treating several ailments all around the body. This is because, collagen plays a vital role within the human body, helping skin tissue repair itself, and helping the skin to retain moisture and overall health.

Naturally, as we age collagen production within the body begins to slow down. PRP can help to restimulate collagen and infuse affected tissue with the key nutrients it needs to regenerate.

In skin treatments, PRP is proven to help address:

– Fine lines and wrinkles

– Loss of volume

– Acne scarring

– Hair loss

– skin tone and laxity

– Rosacea

– Complexion

Round the body, PRP treatments can also be used to target:

– Gynaecological issues to restore a healthy sex life

– Hair loss

– Tennis elbow

– Golfer’s elbow

– Early osteoarthritis

– Chronic muscle injuries

– Chronic ligament injuries (including on the knees, ankles, elbows, and wrists

– Chondral injuries

How it Works

PRP is one of the safest aesthetic treatments on the market because it uses nothing more than your own blood, and the natural nutrients found within it.

Human blood contains several key nutrients that all play a pivotal role in supporting overall health and functionality. These nutrients include growth proteins, a yellowish substance known as plasma that carries water and enzymes around the body, and platelets that support coagulation.

The first step in treatment is to draw blood from the patient’s arm, in a similar fashion to a regular blood test. The extracted blood is then placed into a special centrifuge and spun until the plasma, growth proteins, and platelets are separated.

These extracted components are now collected and injected into the treatment area. Once injected, the body will begin its natural healing process and begin sending newly produced collagen to the injection site to repair damaged tissue and boost skin cells in the area for healing.

For optimum results, patients may be required to undergo several treatments. The number of treatments required will depend on the indication and severity.
