PRP For Hair Loss

Hair loss can be incredibly frustrating and can be caused by a number of factors. It typically occurs when the hair follicles remain dormant, and new hair doesn’t replace hair that has fallen out.

What Causes Hair Loss?

The most prevalent cause of hair loss is family history, and androgenic alopecia, most commonly known as male-pattern and female-pattern baldness. This can be attributed to changes that come with natural aging, causing the hair to thin.

The term baldness typically refers to excessive hair loss from the scalp, which can leave bald patches. As hair, for many people is interictally linked to self-confidence, it can impact one’s overall self-confidence and become debilitating.

Hair loss is typically related to one or more of the following factors:

  • Family history (heredity)
  • Hormonal changes
  • Medical conditions
  • Medications
  • Natural ageing

Treating Hair Loss

Whilst some people prefer to let their hair loss run its course, there are specific treatments like PRP that can help address hair loss, prevent it from happening in the future, and stimulate new hair growth to address thinning and baldness.

However, before undergoing any form of hair loss treatment, it is recommended that you speak to a medical professional to help determine the cause of hair loss and address any underlying medical conditions that could be impacting it.

PRP For Hair Loss

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is one of the most popular forms of treatment when it comes to hair thinning and hair loss. It works by using the nutrients found within one’s own blood to encourage the body to begin the natural healing process, produce collagen and stimulate dormant hair follicles to begin producing hair.

Within the blood, several key nutrients play a vital role in supporting overall body functionality. These nutrients include platelets to support coagulation, plasma, a yellowish substance that carries water, salts, and enzymes, and growth-stimulating proteins known as growth factors to support overall health.

During a PRP treatment, these individual nutrients are separated from the blood and injected directly into the scalp to target the hair follicles.

Treating Hair Loss With PRP

PRP is one of the leading aesthetic treatments on the market today and is suitable for all skin types, ages, and ethnicities. Similar to a blood test, treatment begins with a doctor extracting blood from the arm. This blood is then placed in a centrifuge to separate platelet-rich plasma and natural nutrients from the blood. The key nutrients, including the plasma and growth factors, are then injected into several regions of the scalp to target the dormant follicles. Typically, patients require between 40-50 shots per session and will need to undergo three treatments spaced eight weeks apart for the treatment to be effective.

As the follicles can take time in producing new hair, results may not be instant, particularly for those with significant bald patches. Four to six weeks after treatment, you may start to see fresh hair growth, but to maintain the benefits of PRP, it is recommended that you undergo regular maintenance treatments each year.

PRP treatment typically takes around 40 minutes to complete and is known as a relatively non-invasive treatment. There is no real downtime associated with PRP, however, you may experience slight redness of the scalp, bruising, and tenderness for a couple of days following treatment. These side effects are completely natural and should begin to heal after a couple of days.

Is PRP Treatment Safe?

PRP treatment typically takes around 40 minutes to complete and is known as a relatively non-invasive treatment. There is no real downtime associated with PRP, however, you may experience slight redness of the scalp, bruising, and tenderness for a couple of days following treatment. These side effects are completely natural and should begin to heal after a couple of days.

So, is PRP safe? The answer is yes. As PRP treatment uses nothing more than one’s blood, it is considered to be one of the safest aesthetic treatments on the market and it carries a very small risk of infection or complication.

Before undergoing treatment, you should speak to a trained professional. Whilst PRP is considered safe for everybody, there are some medical conditions where it would not be advisable. These conditions include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Hepatitis C
  • HIV
  • Aids
  • Blood cancer
  • Skin cancer
  •  Cardiovascular disease, which requires blood thinning medication

PRP is a fantastic treatment and one that we have been offering for many years now at our clinic. We both do believe that regenerative medicine is the future of aesthetics and PRP is just that – we wish more people knew about its many benefits. The product we use is Regen PRP produced by Regen Lab which we couldn’t recommend enough. Not only is this product safe and easy to use, but it has also benefited patient goals and outcomes. Five stars!
