PRP For Acne Treatment
Acne is one of the most common skincare concerns, and it can affect both men and women at any age. Historically, acne has been mainly attributed to hormonal changes in teenagers during puberty, but it can be triggered at any stage in life by several contributing factors.
What Causes Acne?
As everybody is different, acne will manifest itself differently in each individual. For some, acne may appear as breakouts in specific areas, for others, the breakouts may be more severe and cover the entire surface of the skin.
Unfortunately, for many people, acne may be difficult to treat without medical intervention, and it may also lead to other issues such as permanent scarring, blackheads, whiteheads, papules, or pus-filled spots.
Living With Acne
Acne most commonly affects any area on the body with larger oil glands, including the face, back, and neck. It develops when sebum and dead skin cells block hair follicles within the skin, causing bacteria to form. This bacterium then triggers inflammation in the skin which can cause a breakout to appear.
What Triggers Acne?
The most notable acne trigger is hormonal changes, but it is also triggered by several external factors, including:
- Genetics
- Medication including corticosteroids, anticonvulsants, and androgenic steroids,
- Sun damage
- Lifestyle choices
- Environmental factors
- Skincare and makeup

Treating Acne
You should always consult a medical professional when treating acne to address any underlying issues that may be contributing factors. One of the most popular, and effective treatment methods in addressing acne, and its associated scarring is PRP, which is used to encourage natural healing and stimulate collagen production within the skin to improve skin quality.
PRP Treatment for Acne
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is an injectable treatment that utilises nothing but one’s own blood to encourage the skin to produce more collagen and stimulate new, healthy tissue growth.
Naturally, the human blood contains several nutrients that all play a key role in supporting health, and overall body functionality. These nutrients include platelets that are there to support coagulation, growth-stimulating proteins that support health and plasma that carries salts, water, and enzymes around the body.
PRP works by separating each of those key components from the blood and injecting them underneath the surface of the skin. This encourages the body to begin its natural healing process, in which new collagen is produced and sent to the injection area to heal.
PRP is highly effective and helps combat the appearance of any scarring or pock marks left on the skin from acne-related breakouts.
PRP takes around 40 minutes to complete, depending on the treatment area, and is carried out in a sterile medical environment. First, the doctor will extract blood from the arm. This blood is then placed in a centrifuge and spun vigorously to separate platelet-rich plasma and other key nutrients from the blood.
The key nutrients extracted are then injected into the skin, to penetrate the deeper layers causing the body to begin its natural healing process. After treatment, the growth factors and plasma are distributed throughout the skin to stimulate collagen production. Collagen plays a pivotal role in overall skin health and is responsible for boosting and repairing damaged skin tissue, which in turn minimises the appearance of acne scarring and boosts skin cells in the area which encourages further healing.
PRP is considered one of the safest and most effective treatments on the market for acne. As it uses nothing more than one’s own blood, it doesn’t carry a high complication, or infection rate and has no associated downtime.
Treatment takes around 40 minutes, depending on the severity of the acne, but patients may require more than one treatment for the best results. Following treatment, there may be slight bruising, redness, and tenderness around the injection site, but this is natural and will heal within a few days.
Before undergoing PRP treatment, you should speak to a trained medical professional as there are some conditions that will impact your suitability. Females who are pregnant are not recommended to undergo treatment, and those with medical conditions including cancer, HIV/ AIDS, or cardiovascular diseases should also avoid undergoing PRP treatment.
